Year started at KHS:

1979

Cushla Riordan

I attended Kaikōura High School from 1979 -1983.

After school I joined the Navy, participating in the first Women at Sea trial, followed by a year spent in the Antarctic at the USA base McMurdo.

I retrained as Librarian 15 years ago and now working in New Plymouth at Puke Ariki Library.

I have very fond memories of attending Kaikōura High School.  We were fortunate to have many passionate and engaging teachers who made my High School years a very positive experience.

In particular I enjoyed History with Miss Lambeth and Home Economics with Mrs Nelson.

Moving into the new school was a highlight, with the AV theatre and the new technical block so modern and well equipped. The new library was a special place too, with all those wonderful books ready to borrow.

I remember the sport exchanges as being fun days away from the classroom and on the netball courts, often on chilly Kaikōura days. The opening of the completed gymnasium was a big event. Without the huge fundraising efforts by the parents, school and wider community it would not of been possible and many hours were spent playing on the brand new basketball court.
