After school, I went to Canterbury University then worked as an economist in Wellington. Moved into journalism (music then business) in New York and Auckland, then worked in corporate PR, including a dozen years in Southeast Asia, based in Bangkok. Now doing part-time consulting, mainly in Wellington, where I live with my partner Anne. I cycle and play as much tennis as I can and manage to lose myself in books and music on good days.

I have a lot of good memories of attending Kaikōura High School. Had some great classmates, and teachers, who were really committed to their students. Remember studying Māori for my first four years - I think KHS was one of the first schools in the country to offer this. A lot of upsides to being a small school, but a downside was tough subject choices in the senior years (eg. History or Maths; Physics or Economics). I was probably well behaved, but I did have one decent (and winning) fist fight which got me hauled up in front of the deputy principal. I won't name names. Photos from the mufti-wearing seventh form year are best burned - walk shorts, knee-high socks and Soul Shoes. And got to enjoy the move to the new site in 1979 near the end of my final year.

Our fourth form trip around the South Island was a highlight, as much for the antics on the bus as the sightseeing. And an earlier trip to Christchurch where we went to a marae, a lolly factory (with unlimited free samples), and a meeting with Fred Dagg. Maths competitions and plays in Christchurch, football and tennis trips away. A week doing French classes at Christchurch Boys High was great fun but also a culture shock - teachers calling me by my surname, prefects telling me off because my blazer had a crayfish on it. Made me appreciate even more the less traditional and more relaxed environment at KHS.

I kind of remember everyone, and a lot of people (classmates and teachers) left good impressions. I was lucky to go to KHS, it proved a great grounding for the rest of my life.
