I attended Kaikoura High from 1978 until 1982. I recently moved back to Kaikoura and now work as a Learning Support Co-ordinator based at the High School.
Memories of attending Kaikoura High School
I have some great memories of attending the High School. When I started we were at the old site in the Esplanade, and I probanly took for granted the amazing location, biking to school each day! I remember PE with Mr Flavell was always fun, and Math with Mr Jones where he would share stories from his life. Moving to the new site on Rorrisons Road was great, as I could go home for lunch, just across the road. Mrs Beasely (English) was a favourite teacher, as was Mr Skinner (Social Studies). Best memories revolve around being involved with Kapa Haka under the guidance of wonderful Mrs Piripi.
Any special events you remember
School socials in the Memorial Hall and later in the new Gymnasium were a highlight of the year. The annual Tennis Champs, and School Speech Competition were always memorable for me. In the 6th Form we were able to wear Mufti which was great, but no trousers unless they were wool! The School production Queen of the SIlver Dollar was a highlight for me, written by Mrs Braun and starring Roseanne Smith.
Any special people you remember
As smentioned, teachers Mrs Beasely who took our class to the Court Theatre to see MacBeth in our 6th form year: Mr Skinner who took us abseiling and river crossing, and taught me how to critique a song in Social Studies (it was a Beatles number I think!). Mrs Piripi for the trips away, the singing and performing in Kapa Haka.
